How to take the best photos with your iPhone with night mode

It is sometimes terrible to take pictures in the dark. The image becomes blurry or pitch black. Yet there is a solution on the iPhone that should prevent that: the night mode. But how do you take the best photos? We tell you.

One of the reasons to buy an iPhone is of course the camera. You can take beautiful photos and videos with your device. Of course, the iPhone 14 Pro (Max) is doing better than the regular 14. Still, both devices have night mode. But how do you best use it?

This is night mode on your iPhone

Night Mode is available on iPhone 11 and newer models. In addition, the function can also be found on the iPad Pro. You cannot always use the function. This is only available in low light. You will then see the icon appear in the top left corner.

The purpose of the mode is, of course, clear. You get better pictures in the dark because of the function. You can actually compare it with the shutter speed of a normal camera. If there is less light, let the camera take longer to take a picture. More light then falls on the sensor, so you see more.

You can do more with night mode than you think

Incidentally, night mode does not only apply to beautiful skylines. On the iPhone 12 Pro and later Pro models, the feature is also available in portrait mode. This way you can also make perfect portraits of faces in the dark.

Since the regular iPhone 12, the night mode is also available for the selfie camera. This means that you also have the perfect selfie in the dark that you can share on social media or forward to your friends.

Do you have a tripod for your iPhone? Then you can even make time-lapse videos with night mode from the 12. That tripod is important, because otherwise the movements of your hand will make the video blurry.

That is how it works

Did you spot the moon icon at the top of your screen? Fine, then we can start. If it is gray, then the night mode is not on. Then click on it and it will turn yellow. You will immediately see on the screen of your iPhone that the image is getting lighter.

This night mode control is automatic. However, you can also adjust it manually so that you get exactly the photos you want. Then press the arrow that you see at the top in the middle. Then click on the moon below and choose how long you want to leave the night mode on.

You may think the automatic choice is best, but it certainly pays to play around with the settings. That’s what the great photographers do, of course. This way you can get just that little bit of different light, which makes your photo even more special.
