How to Type Currency Symbols on iPhone, iPad, or Mac

Perhaps you are often abroad or regularly interact with users in other countries. Then you may sometimes need to type an amount in a different currency on your iPhone, iPad or Mac.

In the standard keyboard you can quickly find the dollar sign or the euro symbol. But the other currency symbols are more hidden. We explain how you can type the different currency symbols on an iPhone, iPad or Mac.

How to Type Currency Symbols on iPhone or iPad

  • Activate the keyboard by tapping a text field
  • Press the 123 key on the keyboard
  • Place your finger on the Euro sign (€)
  • Wait a few moments
  • Drag your finger to the desired currency symbol
  • Lift your finger to select the character

As you may notice, not all currencies are represented in this view. However, the most commonly used currencies are shown and you will undoubtedly have enough with this. Below we explain how you can use other symbols if necessary.

Currency on a Mac

If you want to type foreign currencies on your Mac, you can use the Character Viewer. This is a collection of all the emojis and symbols that you can use by default on your Mac.

  • Press the Globe symbol on your keyboard or use the key combination control + command⌘ + space
  • Open the large view by clicking on the window icon at the top right
  • Go to ‘Currency Symbols’
  • Double-click on a symbol to use it

Copy and paste

Is the desired Currency symbol not present in the iPhone or iPad keyboard display, or in the character view of your Mac? Then you can also use the old-fashioned copy and paste. Search for the currency using a search engine (such as Google) and copy the symbol, then paste it into your document or message.

Text replacement

If you always want to type a specific currency symbol quickly, you can also use text replacement. When you make a specific combination under iOS, iPadOS or macOS, you can have it automatically replaced by the currency symbol.
