Together with iOS 18, Apple has provided the AirPods Pro 2nd generation and AirPods 4 with a firmware update and new options. For example, you can use Siri Interactions with head gestures, but you can also use voice isolation.
Thanks to voice isolation, which we know from the iPhone, iPad and Mac, you can remain clearly audible while calling, for example when there is wind or when you are in a noisy environment. We explain how this function works and how you can set it up.
Voice isolation for AirPods
For the best call quality in any environment, the AirPods Pro 2nd generation and AirPods 4 have Voice Isolation. A feature you may already know from your Mac, iPhone and iPad. Machine learning on the H2 chip in AirPods Pro and the paired iPhone, iPad or Mac isolates speech and improves its quality.
At the same time, disturbing background noise such as wind or traffic is filtered out for the person on the other end of the line. This makes you easier to understand when you have telephone conversations.
Voice isolation conditions for AirPods
- Only available on AirPods Pro 2nd generation and both AirPods 4 models
- iOS 18, iPadOS 18, macOS Sequoia or newer must be installed on the paired iPhone, iPad or Mac
- AirPods must have the latest AirPods firmware
Set up and use voice isolation
Once you meet the conditions, voice isolation will automatically be activated on your AirPods. There are no settings available to enable or disable the feature. Using machine learning on the H2 chip, the speech is automatically isolated and its quality improved.
Also while gaming
You will notice an improvement in speech not only when making telephone calls, but also when gaming. The AirPods Pro 2nd Generation feature the fastest wireless audio transmission Apple has ever offered for mobile games. For consultation with teammates and other players, the voice quality of AirPods Pro has also been improved, including 16-bit audio at 48 kHz.
