Read here the first Dutch review of the Huawei FreeClip earbuds with an innovative open-ear design for comfortable wearing.
Huawei often makes good quality and beautiful products, but many products were no longer released here. However, Huawei wants to change that this year and they are starting to do so by releasing the Huawei FreeClip earbuds. We have reported about this before, now you can read the review of the Huawei FreeClip earbuds in this article.
Design and case
The Huawei FreeClip earbuds come in a beautiful white box containing an elegant charging box. When we open the box, we see very uniquely designed earplugs. It takes some time to figure out how that should work. There is a speaker in the round part, so that is in front of the ear entrance and the rest falls over the earlobe to the back. Huawei calls the earphones an innovative open-ear listening experience with maximum wearing comfort.
The minimalist designed ball looks elegant and has a flexible C-shaped rubber/nickel/titanium coupling to a wide bean for behind the ear. With a weight of only 5.6 grams, it is very comfortable compared to earplugs that have to be inserted into the ear canal with rubber plugs. We miss an L/R indication, but learn that the earplugs are interchangeable and can determine left and right yourself. There are two colors available, silvery anthracite and pearly purple. The IP value is 54, which means they are not waterproof, but they can tolerate water splashes.
Technology
They are Bluetooth 5.3 earbuds with a range of about 10 meters, which can be paired with two devices. The SBC, AAC, L2HC and LC3 codecs are supported, the well-known high-resolution codecs are missing. The sound is passed on to the drivers located in the sphere. When taking off the caps there is a car break. 2 or 3 taps on that ball or C-shaped arm can give commands such as play/pause audio, play the next song or answer/end a call. This can be adjusted to your own wishes via the Huawei AI Life app and a command for a voice assistant can also be activated. During telephone calls, microphone systems in the sphere and bean are used that filter the voice from the ambient noise with special AI techniques.
Battery and charging
The 46 gram charging box has a USB connection for charging; QI wireless charging is also optionally possible. The FreeClips each connect to the charging area with two contact points for quick charging. The battery life (55 mAh) of the FreeClips is more than 8 hours at normal volume, with the charging case (510 mAh) you get a total of about 36 hours. The FreeClips are fully charged within 40 minutes and the box requires 60 minutes of patience and 150 minutes for wireless charging. Those are good times for this compact set.
Listening experience
You hardly feel the earplugs and are therefore comfortable for a long time. Shaking the head ensures the caps stay in place. The sound is produced in front of the ear entrance and sounds surprisingly good with a lot of detail; the bass is a bit thin. Four sound profiles can be selected via the app, shifting accents. The ambient noise comes through well, so you are not isolated from your surroundings. Only at high volume will someone else complain about audible noise.
Conclusion
The Huawei FreeClips are an innovative design and comfortable earplugs for anyone who wants better mid-range quality sound in combination with an open listening environment for undisturbed communication. At normal volume, no one will be bothered by the open-ear sound. The recommended retail price is a bit on the high side, but you get something special for it.
