Huawei Watch GT 3 Pro – sports with extra load

The Huawei Watch GT 3 Pro is a premium smartwatch that runs on HarmonyOS. That is an operating system that Huawei developed itself. You use the smart watch in combination with Android or iOS. The model we are testing, the Titanium version, lasts up to two weeks on a full battery. Is that the smartwatch’s strongest point?

Make no mistake about Huawei’s current offer. The Watch GT 3 Pro is available in different variants. There is already a fundamental difference between Titanium and Ceramic: the former model is larger and takes about two weeks to fully discharge. The ceramic version is slightly smaller and is completely empty after a week. In addition, you also have a difference in straps.

On the Huawei website you can see that you can choose from three versions: the cheapest model has a price of about 370 euros, while the most expensive costs almost 500 euros.

Not a popular segment

We test the 500 euro model. That is important to know, because that version has a special bracelet. The click system offers one size, so not everyone can wear that thing on their wrist. Maybe your wrist is too narrow or too wide – you’ll only find out the moment you put it on.

This is a bold choice; after all, the smartwatch is not a popular segment within consumer electronics and so you potentially exclude people. That is probably the group of people looking for a smartwatch to replace the traditional watch.

This version of the Huawei Watch GT 3 Pro does have that potential, if we look at the excellent and premium design. It is that the screen is usually off, because otherwise you do not have the impression at first glance that you are dealing with a smartwatch.

Another bold choice is weight and size of the smartwatch. It is in fact quite heavy and substantial, making it less suitable for people who like more subtle watches. That design also has another disadvantage: the watch is not very comfortable when you start exercising with it.

Beautiful amoled screen

In that fairly bulky cabinet is a beautiful 1.43-inch AMOLED screen. That screen has a tight and sharp resolution of 466 by 466 pixels. You won’t get any sharper than this on your wrist for the time being. Everything you view on that screen looks very sleek, colorful and clear.

Images, messages, settings; everything is very clear. In addition, the dials look very cool, especially when you choose a version with a black background. It seems as if that background seamlessly merges into the black border around the screen. It looks unparalleled.

The titanium case has a polished finish, with a ceramic layer on the bottom (the part that rests on your skin). The sapphire glass on top protects the Huawei Watch GT 3 Pro from scratches and other damage, which generally makes the watch score well in terms of durability.

Then combine with a battery life of seven to fourteen days (depending on use) and you have a smartwatch experience that is not disappointing at first glance. The device does what it’s supposed to do, so it’s pretty good at it. But what about the software?

HarmonyOS and the lack of apps

The hardware is really top notch. Except for one aspect, we have nothing to complain about. The problem with this product, or Huawei’s products in general, is the software. HarmonyOS is light, works well and responds very quickly and smoothly to your input. But the system does not offer a lot, in addition to the standard options. Tracking sports performance, receiving notifications, (limited) replying to messages, measuring heart rate – it’s all possible with the thing, but that’s about it. The additional app offerings are so meager it might as well not have been there.

Somewhere you can make the caveat that Huawei is not as big as Samsung and Apple and that the company therefore struggles with offering third-party apps within its own download store. But of course that is of little use to you as a consumer and user. They will not care why this is so – they only see that services like Spotify are absent and that music control is already becoming problematic. Sometimes you can arrange some things with a certain detour, but you don’t get a smartwatch at home and then mess around with it.

Sport, sport and another sport

What the Huawei Watch GT 3 Pro is very good at, however, is offering various sports options. The smartwatch supports a wide range of sports, giving you a good impression of your sports performance. It does not matter whether you run, cycle, swim or, for example, ski, since Huawei offers more than enough sports. You get insight into your heart rate, distance covered, exercise time and even the amount of oxygen in your blood. You can also map your sleep and get an overview of the number of calories burned.

Unfortunately, we also have to make a caveat here. After a few trips to the gym to go wild on a stationary bike (you have to have something to spare for work), we notice that the number of calories burned on the smartwatch does not match the number on the trainer’s screen. The difference is really significant, which makes this a bad thing. The difference lies in the measuring method: the Watch makes a well-considered estimate based on your heart rate, while professional fitness equipment has more measuring points for the data.

You can of course blame a smartwatch, especially one aimed at fitness, for this being the case. But somehow it also makes sense. When a device has fewer measuring points, the findings are less accurate. However, a difference of nearly 200 calories on a fifty-minute indoor bike ride bypasses the idea of ”less accurate.” And that while the Huawei Watch GT 3 Pro is just so accurate in all other parts related to sports… It’s a shame, but because of that the device loses a good asset, which it so badly needs.

Huawei Watch GT 3 Pro – conclusion

In our opinion, the Huawei Watch GT 3 Pro has three things to score well on: design, battery life and sports options. These are very important parts for smart watches, parts that manufacturers really need to have in order to be relevant. When it comes to sports, Huawei scores well, but the huge stab it drops makes the device almost useless. In terms of design and battery life, the smartwatch scores very well. This is probably the most beautiful smart watch of the moment, one that looks a lot like a traditional watch.

But if you want such a watch, with smart functions, you’d better look elsewhere. Although the Huawei Watch GT 3 Pro is pleasing to the eye, has fine (yet limited) software and has a nice long life, those are not the reasons to choose this smartwatch series per se. We also encounter these qualities elsewhere. And if you prefer not to use HarmonyOS or software in general, you can still go for a hybrid model: a normal watch that offers some options for sports and communication. They are cheaper and do exactly what you expect.
