I know people who would like to live in England, but there they pay in pounds while we pay in euros. Can you live in England if you don’t have any pounds?

Can you live in another country where there are other currencies?

Answer

Dear Pieter,

that is certainly possible. I just got back from a trip to London, England. If you travel to such a country, you also have to pay in pounds and not in euros. There are exchange offices for this, which give you a corresponding amount in pounds in exchange for a certain amount in euros. How much a euro is worth in other currencies is called an exchange rate. Currently 1 euro is worth about 0.8 pounds.

I don’t know if you remember the Belgian franc? That used to be the currency here in Belgium. At that time, all European countries had their own currency. The euro has only really existed since 2002.

Greetings,
Koen
