I would like to know which frog is in my pond. Is there a website where you can find such information?

Checking which animal is in my pond and whether it poses any danger to my fish or humans (poison frog?).

Answer

The frog in the picture is one from the green frog complex. In Flanders there are 3 forms of the green frog: the pool frog, the bastard frog and the lake frog. Based on this photo it is difficult to determine which of the three is present in your pond. You can find this out yourself on the basis of the information you will find on www.hylawerkgroep.be and then click on “amphibians and reptiles”.

Frogs/amphibians pose no danger to your fish. The opposite is true. Fish represent a danger for (eggs and larvae of) amphibians. Salamanders in particular are susceptible to predation by fish and do really well in fishless ponds.

You really don’t have to worry about the poison of the frog. It serves primarily to give the frog a bad taste, which makes predators prefer not to see the frog as prey. If you lick the skin of a frog or toad, you may have some diarrhea. There is no danger of poison concentrating in the water and causing harm to fish or humans.

Amphibians are more of an enrichment for your pond than a danger.
