If a hen’s egg is the hen’s “menstruation,” then what exactly is the ovum?

The ovum is the largest cell. But where exactly is that cell located in a chicken egg?

Is the egg cell the yolk (or is it perhaps the cell nucleus)?

Since this is a cell, can you use the microscope to look for chromosomes, ribosomes, mitochondria?

Answer

Best,

The egg is not menstruation, but the hen’s ovulation. The chicken egg starts as a yolk (yellow) and will get the other layers (white, membranes, shell…) as it descends. The fertilization of an egg always happens before the other layers around it are created.

The yolk can therefore be compared to the ovum. You’re never going to see the DNA, ribosomes,… there; that is much too small and disappears in the masses.

Kind regards,
