Radio 1 still broadcasts from Brussels, I thought, but my reception is worse when I drive to Brussels by car. Looking for another channel gives me very clear French-language channels. Do the Walloon channels then broadcast in a different (better?) way? Are those channels more powerful?

The phenomenon you describe could be due to all sorts of reasons: the limitations of the radio receivers we use, the oversupply of transmitters in Brussels, which certainly do not all comply with the legal standards and perhaps not all of them in perfect working order. are spectrum.
But as I understand it, you listen to Radio 1 (good choice by the way!), departing from Leuven. The problem, I suspect, is that you tune in to the (rather weak) channel of Leuven on 98.5 MHz. This is a support transmitter with a power of 500 W. It is better to tune in to the Sint Pieters-Leeuw transmitter throughout Flemish Brabant: a strong transmitter with a very high mast on 91.7 MHz.
