Instagram prioritizes new posts and introduces refresh button

Instagram has changed the order in which messages are displayed. From now on you will see more recent photos and videos at the top of your timeline. A refresh button is also introduced, so that your feed does not refresh on its own.

New messages are therefore not by definition at the top again, as was the case in the past. “Based on your feedback, we’ll make it more likely that newer posts will appear earlier in your timeline,” Instagram says.

The app thus chooses a middle way, as it were, between the two previous ways of displaying messages. First, the social medium showed photos and videos completely in chronological order. This changed in 2016 when they were ranked by ‘relevance’. The purpose of this was to ensure that you would not miss popular posts anymore.

However, the change caused some frustration among users. Sometimes you got to see messages that were two to three days old. Especially when you check the app several times a day, as many probably do, this can cause annoyance.

Refresh button: only new messages when you want

In addition, users were not satisfied with the fact that the timeline refreshed itself. If you were scrolling like this, it could just be that you were sent back to the top of your feed.

The ‘New messages’ button gives you more control over when you want to download the most recent photos, videos and stories. When you press it you will be sent to the top of your feed. If you don’t, nothing will happen and you can keep scrolling.

Instagram concludes its press release by indicating that the timeline will be improved in various ways in the coming months. How, of course that remains a surprise. The update with a more chronological feed and refresh button is rolling out from now on.
