Installing an AirPods update: this is how you do it via your iPhone

Apple recently released its first update to the AirPods. But how do you install these on the wireless earbuds? iPhoned shows how to install an AirPods update.

Install AirPods update

If Apple releases an update for the AirPods, you do not have to notice this. Normally, this update can be downloaded and installed completely in the background, without you noticing.

However, should this go wrong, you can also manually download and install the new version. Before you start, it’s a good idea to check which firmware version your AirPods are running. You need the paired iPhone to check this as well as install the update, since AirPods don’t have a WiFi chip with which they can download updates themselves.

Install an AirPods update, that’s how you do it

  1. Go to Settings -> General -> About -> AirPods and check the current firmware version;
  2. Check if your AirPods are connected to your iPhone. View the Control Panel by swiping from bottom to top on your screen;
  3. Turn on wifi and bluetooth;
  4. Place the AirPods in the charging case and close the lid;
  5. Connect the box with a USB cable to a charger or your computer;
  6. Make sure your iPhone is near the AirPods and wait 15 minutes to download and install the update.

You should now have the most recent version of the AirPods firmware installed. You can easily check this by going through the first step again. The AirPods only appear in this list if they are connected to your iPhone. Apple has added the option to update AirPods so that they can fix bugs afterwards. Not a superfluous luxury, because various bugs have already been discovered since the arrival of the wireless earbuds. Fortunately, these can often be solved with software without going back to an Apple Store.
