Within Europe the same rates apply for mobile internet, but outside Europe you have to pay extra. Turn off data roaming on Samsung Galaxy S phones to avoid a high bill.
Turn off roaming
When your mobile operator’s internet network is out of range, your phone tries to connect to available local networks. This technique is called roaming. Using a foreign network is relatively expensive. If you want to prevent the bill from increasing unnoticed, turn off data roaming when you cross the border. You can then no longer just surf the Internet or, for example, e-mail. This means that you do not incur any costs.

Turn off data roaming
To disable data roaming on a Samsung Galaxy S6 (Android 7), S7 (Android 8) and S10 (Android 9):
- Tap on apps > Institutions or swipe up > Institutions.
- Tap on Connections.
- Tap on Mobile networks.
- The bar behind ‘Roaming’ is green when roaming is on. Drag the slider to the left to turn off roaming.
Do you use the internet abroad?
If you still want to use the internet abroad, you can take out an internet bundle for abroad via your provider. Even then it is wise to turn off roaming. Turn it on temporarily when you want to use the internet.
Or use a WiFi connection. That works on the S6, S7 and S10 like this:
- Tap on apps > Institutions or swipe up and tap Institutions.
- Tap Connections.
- If necessary, drag the slider behind ‘Wi-Fi’ to the right to turn on WiFi. The WiFi is on when the slider is blue.
- Tap on WiFi. An overview of the available network connections appears. Tap the desired connection.
- The lock next to a connection indicates that you need a password to use the connection. Enter a password if necessary (many catering establishments make this available to customers).
- Tap on To connect.
Tip: Never work with confidential information on public Wi-Fi networks. These networks are not always secure. Read more about this in the article ‘Safe internet on the go’.
