With iOS 11, Apple makes a whole category of apps superfluous in one fell swoop. The Notes app has a handy built-in document scanner, so you can quickly scan a piece of paper and take the text digitally with you.
iOS 11 document scanner: scan paper quickly and easily
In recent years, Apple has expanded the Notes app from a simple shopping list app to a full-fledged app to increase your productivity. You can easily compose, share and lock a note and with extensive options you can make drawings, import images and links.

There is an extra function with iOS 11. A built-in document scanner makes it easy to digitize a physical document using your iPhone or iPad camera.
The camera recognizes the paper so that the scan automatically cuts off the background. Reflection is also prevented and skewed documents are corrected. This is all done automatically, so you have a clear, actionable scan in seconds. Keep in mind that you need at least iOS 11 for this feature.
This is how you use the document scanner
- Open the Notes app;
- Create a new note or open an existing one;
- Tap the plus sign and choose ‘Scan documents’;
- Point your camera at the document and print;
- Adjust the edges and confirm your scan.
The scanned document is automatically placed in your note. Here you can easily find it again. By tapping the image, you can also add it to your Camera Roll, or share it in any other app. If you have an Apple Pencil, you can also quickly and easily sign your scan here.
