iOS 17.3 beta 2 is out – but there’s a big problem

Apple has released iOS 17.3 beta 2 to developers, but you probably shouldn’t install it on your iPhone yet. This is why.

iOS 17.3 beta 2 is out

After the release of iOS 17.2, Apple immediately started testing iOS 17.3 in beta. The new beta is expected to reintroduce collaborative playlists to Apple Music (which were removed in a late beta of iOS 17.2) and possibly add AirPlay in supporting hotels, among other things.

But more interesting is the Stolen Device Protection feature. Enabling this feature will make it more difficult to perform certain actions, such as changing your Apple ID password. Using just your iPhone password, a thief can change the Apple ID password and wipe your iPhone, but Stolen Device Protection adds Face ID or Touch ID if you’re not in a trusted location.

This is the problem

Unfortunately, the update appears to be causing many people’s iPhones to crash during the iOS 17.3 beta 2 installation process. This crashing seems to mainly affect people who have the ‘Tap Back’ feature enabled on their iPhone. There are also reports of iPhones going into an endless reboot loop. Apple has now withdrawn the update.

This is the solution

If you have experienced the above problem yourself in the meantime, fortunately we have a solution for you. This one comes from Mastodon user Guilherme Rambo.

  • Download the iOS 17.3 beta 1 IPSW on your Mac;
  • Connect your iPhone to your Mac;
  • Press Volume Up, Volume Down, and then press and hold the Side button until recovery mode appears;
  • Usage iMazing (or Finder if there is no other option) to restore the IPSW.

It’s best to use the iMazing app as it allows you to restore without wiping your iPhone first. Using Finder will automatically erase your iPhone’s data.
