iOS automatic passwords: this is how you use them on other devices

In iOS 12, Apple introduces the AutoFill feature, which automatically creates strong passwords for you. Very handy if you can also use it on other devices. This way you can set iOS automatic passwords on other devices.

This is how you use iOS automatic passwords on other devices

Thanks to your Apple ID, it is easy to use the automatic passwords generated for you in iOS 12 on other paired devices. When you have a password generated on your iPad, it can also be found in the Keychain on your iPhone, and vice versa. You can also find these passwords on your Mac.

Because you use iCloud, passwords are automatically saved and synced with all your other linked Apple devices. So as long as you have the iCloud Keychain function activated on all devices, you don’t have to do anything to use the automatic passwords elsewhere. Since the improved AutoFill feature is also in macOS Mojave, it works the other way around too.

To check if you have the Keychain function on, go to your iCloud settings. Here you can enable or disable the option.

iOS automatic passwords on Windows or Android

If you do have an iPhone, but for example a Windows PC or Android tablet, it is a different story. In such a case, it is unfortunately not possible to enter the saved passwords on your other device via iCloud. If you still want to use the automatic passwords, you will have to retype them from your iPhone.

But there are more useful solutions. Password managers like 1Password or LastPass work with automatic passwords on iOS, and also sync with other devices. So it is recommended to set another app as the default password manager on your iPhone. You do this as follows.

  1. Go to Settings and select ‘Passwords and Accounts’;
  2. Tap on ‘Fill in automatically’;
  3. Select the password manager you want to use here.

When you install it on your PC or tablet, you always have your passwords at hand, wherever you are. Just as convenient and no less secure than Apple’s own password manager.
