‘iPhone 13 Pro (Max) gets energy-efficient screen’

The iPhone 13 Pro will get a screen that is about fifteen percent more energy-efficient than its cheaper brother, the ‘normal’ iPhone 13. That claims DigiTimes.

Rumor: Screen of iPhone 13 Pro energy-efficient

The Taiwanese website writes that only the most expensive iPhones of 2021 will get a so-called ‘low-power LTPO’ screen. This display allows a refresh rate of 120Hz, which makes images and animations look very smooth. The current Apple top models, the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max, are stuck at 60Hz.

In addition, claims DigiTimes that the screen of the iPhone 13 Pro (and iPhone 13 Pro Max) is very energy efficient. The panel would consume between fifteen and twenty percent less power than the cheaper entry-level models, the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini.

Cooperation with LG and Samsung

According to the Taiwanese website, LG and Samsung will supply the screens to Apple. Both parties are said to be in the process of getting production ready. Due to this switch, production capacity will remain limited this year, according to DigiTimes. This may mean that only a limited number of iPhone 13 Pro models can be made.

Apple seems to be in talks with Chinese screen manufacturers to make up for these shortages. The question is whether their quality meets Apple’s requirements and whether they can produce on a large scale.

High refresh rate consumes electricity

A screen with a high refresh rate delivers beautiful images, but the battery of your smartphone is less happy with it. It has to supply more power to keep the display going. A screen with 120Hz refresh rate refreshes 120 times per second; a 60Hz screen only 60 times.

Android phones solve this problem by leaving the choice up to the user. In the settings of many smartphones you can therefore choose which refresh rate you want to use.

Some handsets, like the one recently unveiled OnePlus 9 Pro, have adaptive refresh rate. The refresh rate takes into account the content you are currently viewing and makes the assessment whether a high speed is necessary.
