Goodbye Qualcomm, hello Apple. According to a reliable source, the iPhone 15 will get a 5G modem. Apple would switch “at the earliest” in 2023 to home-made modems for better performance.
Rumor: Apple 5G modem will be in 2023 iPhone
That writes Ming-Chi Kuo. Kuo is a well-known name in the world of iPhone rumors and previously predicted, for example, the design of the iPhone 12. A telephone modem is needed to send and receive data, so that you can send WhatsApp messages, for example.
According to Kuo, the iPhone will switch to home-made Apple modems at the earliest in 2023. The company is currently working together with Qualcomm for this. For example, the iPhone 12, the first Apple device with 5G, uses a modem from this supplier.
For Apple supplies, making your own must yield several benefits. For example, by producing 5G modems, the company is no longer dependent on Qualcomm.
In addition, Apple can tailor the modems precisely to get the most out of the iPhone. Kuo therefore claims that Apple’s 5G modems are much faster and more energy efficient than the current Qualcomm chips.
Independence for Apple
Apple has been working towards more independence for years. In 2019, the company acquired Intel’s modem division, which supplied the modems for previous iPhones. It has since been rumored that Apple will switch to proprietary modems in the coming years.
Last year, Apple even broke completely with Intel. From now on, the Cupertino company uses its own computer processors instead of Intel. The first chip in this line, the M1 chip that is in the MacBook Air, for example, is more powerful, quieter and more energy-efficient.
It therefore seems logical that Apple will increasingly distance itself from Qualcomm in the coming years, as happened with Intel.
Kuo does warn about the risks. According to the insider, making smartphone modems is a completely different sport and Apple may have to deal with disappointing results.
