iPhone 16 Pro: Larger screen, premium camera system, camera button, A18 Pro and more

Apple today announced the iPhone 16 (Plus), iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max. The latest generation iPhone features a renewed design with a larger screen and is of course still made of titanium.

In addition, the Pro models benefit from a super-fast A18 Pro processor for Apple Intelligence, a renewed and premium camera system with a pressure-sensitive camera control button. Battery life has been improved with support for super-fast charging and 20W wireless charging. The phone can be pre-ordered from September 13.

Titanium design

The titanium design introduced last year is popular and Apple has also chosen this material for the high-end iPhone 16. Titanium is relatively hard, strong, scratches less quickly and is also lighter than stainless steel.

Larger screen with thinner bezels

For the first time since 2020, Apple has adjusted the screen size of its smartphones and is moving to a larger display. For example, the iPhone 16 Pro has a 6.3-inch screen, the previous model has a size of 6.1 inches. The iPhone 16 Pro Max has gone from 6.7 inches to 6.9 inches. The iPhone 16 Pro (Max) has the thinnest screen bezels ever in a smartphone.

Due to the larger screen, the size of the iPhone Pro models has also grown slightly. For example, the iPhone 16 Pro has a height of 149.6 mm (+3 mm), a width of 71.45 mm (+0.85 mm) with a screen edge of 1.2 mm (-0.51 mm). The thickness of this model remains the same: 8.25 mm. The iPhone 16 Pro Max has a size of 163 mm (+3.1 mm) high, 77.58 mm (+0.88 mm) wide, 8.26 mm (+0.01 mm) thick and with a screen edge of 1.15 mm (-0.4 mm).

Like the iPhone 15 Pro (Max), the new premium model is of course equipped with a Dynamic Island with an always-on display with a refresh rate of 120Hz (ProMotion).

Premium camera system adjusted

The camera system of the premium iPhone has been renewed, still consisting of three lenses with a LiDAR scanner. Both the Pro and Pro Max models are equipped with new camera lenses.

48 megapixel ultra wide angle lens

With the iPhone 16 Pro (Max), Apple has added a new Ultra Wide lens, a component that has been largely untouched since the iPhone 13 Pro. The Ultra Wide lens has a new 48-megapixel sensor, a huge leap forward from the current 12-megapixel sensor. Additionally, the Ultra Wide lens takes better photos and videos in low-light and dark environments.

Tetraprism telephoto lens for all Pro models

The iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max feature a 120mm Tetraprism lens that lets you capture images up to at least five times without losing quality. In the previous generation, this special lens was only available in the Max models. In addition to adding it to the standard Pro model, Apple has updated the sensor to perform even better in low-light conditions.

Improved wide angle lens

The standard wide-angle lens has been revamped and renamed the Fusion camera. Of course, it still has a 48MP lens with second-generation sensor-shift optical image stabilization, 100% Focus Pixels, and support for super high-resolution photos.

The larger main sensor with a better dynamic range and has less noise. The larger dynamic range ensures that there is more difference between the lightest and darkest part of a photo. This results in better contrast and less ‘black spots’ in low light conditions.

Anti-reflective coating

Apple has applied an anti-reflective coating to the camera lenses, including those of the iPhone 16 (Plus), to reduce unwanted glare. Also known as lens flare, this is an optical effect that occurs when bright light, such as from the sun, shines directly into the lens of a camera. This causes unwanted light spots or glare that are visible in the photo. Apple is trying to reduce this with the help of lens coating technology.

Camera control button

New is the Camera control button that can be found on the right side under the side button. This smart button can be used while taking photos and videos. This is a pressure-sensitive button that can even be operated with swipe movements. By lightly pressing the button, the user can, for example, fix the focus or exposure, just like with a DSLR camera.

By pressing the button all the way down, the photo can be taken. You could also zoom in and out by swiping left or right over the button, or adjust the portrait mode, etc. If you press the button for a long time, you can take a video.

When the camera app is not open, the button also ensures that you can open the Camera app from any situation, so you can capture all your favorite moments immediately. In addition, other apps can also fully utilize the camera control button.

Software photo capabilities:

  • Photographic styles has been updated
  • Create cinematic slow motion videos
  • Software improvements for slow motion videos, adjust speed afterwards
  • Record 4K videos at 120 frames per second in HDR and Dolby Vision
  • 4 new studio quality microphones added
  • Recording spatial audio during video recording
  • Audio effects for videos and reduce background noise
  • Ability to pause and resume video recording
  • JPEG-XL support (high quality with smaller file size)
  • Record spatial video and photos for Apple Vision Pro

A18 Pro chip for AI

iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max are powered by the A18 Pro chip, which features a significant boost specifically for Apple Intelligence, allowing iPhone to perform heavy tasks and complex calculations even faster.

The new CPU is 15 percent faster thanks to improvements in the microarchitecture and design. The Neural Engine, key to Apple Intelligence, is even faster than the new generation introduced last year. The Pro-class GPU is up to 20 percent faster and enables entirely new experiences with a new 6-core design that increases peak performance and is more energy efficient.

Improved battery with fast charging

Battery life has been improved for both models, but the most important innovation is the ability to charge the iPhone 16 Pro (Max) extra quickly. You can charge it with 30 Watt fast charging on the cable and 25 Watt fast charging via MagSafe. This was 27 Watt for the cable and 15 Watt with MagSafe.

Other innovations

  • Support for wifi 7
  • End for FineWoven covers
  • Available in four stylish titanium colours including darker black and desert
  • Choose from 256GB, 512GB and 1TB
