There are still all kinds of rumors going around about a completely new iPhone model: will the iPhone 16 Ultra finally arrive in 2024?
Will there be an iPhone 16 Ultra this year?
Apple almost never manages to keep all information about future products secret. But it is often possible to keep an ace up your sleeve. For example, the appearance of the Dynamic Island of the iPhone 14 Pro (Max) was known well in advance, but it only became apparent during the keynote that it was a dynamic notch and not just a pill-shaped recess in the screen. No one expected this, which made the hype around it all the more.
Apple is also often successful in keeping names secret. Look at the Apple Watch Ultra. There were many rumors in the run-up about a Pro version of the Apple Watch, with a larger display and a more powerful battery. The name Apple Watch Pro was obvious, but in the end it turned out to be the Apple Watch Ultra.
In principle, Apple could simply call the next Pro Max model in 2024 the iPhone 16 Ultra. Apple could justify that name change if the 6.7-inch Pro model gets some more features compared to the 6.1-inch Pro model.
What would be the difference with an iPhone 16 Pro Max?
In the (recent) past, Apple always released two 6.1-inch and two 6.7-inch devices. A fifth model could reportedly be a 6.9-inch iPhone. And it could possibly have a function that the iPhone 16 Pro Max does not have. For example, the iPhone 15 Pro Max also has a function that the iPhone 15 Pro does not have (5x optical zoom).
An iPhone 16 Ultra in 2024 is especially likely in view of the Apple Vision Pro. Apple could develop an Ultra iPhone that makes perfect use of the Vision Pro’s features. To be precise: Spatial Video. That could be a feature available exclusively on the iPhone 16 Ultra. In that case, the iPhone 16 Ultra would not add anything compared to the iPhone 16 Pro (Max) if you do not have a Vision Pro.
Of course, there are other ways Apple could make an iPhone 16 Ultra in 2024. After all, there have been rumors for some time that a foldable iPhone is coming. But will that be an iPhone Ultra, or rather a new version of the iPad mini? Only Apple knows that.
