George Hayward, a former Facebook employee, said so in an interview with The New York Post.

It was already suspected that Facebook influenced the battery consumption of Facebook users and Hayward has now confirmed this. The reason why the company is doing this is simple: Facebook tests how well certain functions, such as loading messages, still work when a device’s battery is low. For example, the company tests how fast a message loads when the battery percentage is low.
It makes sense that Facebook conducts these kinds of tests, but Facebook users should be warned about this in advance. Hayward also believed that Facebook should request permission from users who will participate in the test prior to testing. After all, you want to know if Facebook drains your iPhone battery faster.
It is unclear how many people have been affected by the test
Hayward made no statements about how often the test was performed or how many people (unknowingly) took part in the test. In any case, it is not expected that Facebook will announce such tests in the future, especially in view of Hayward’s dismissal.
