Does your iPhone battery run out quickly? Check out our battery tips

Many people have their own tricks to make the battery of their iPhone last as long as possible. There are a lot of myths, but in this overview we only discuss the tips that really work. By making smart use of the tips below, you can be sure that your iPhone battery will run out less quickly.

1. Check which apps are consuming too much power

To measure is to know, and that also applies to your battery usage. That’s why iOS has a handy built-in overview where you can see exactly which apps use the most power. You view this overview as follows:

  1. Open the Settings app;
  2. Tap on ‘Battery’;
  3. Look under ‘Battery use’.

Then you can see exactly which apps have consumed the most power over the past 24 hours or the past ten days. By on ‘show activity’ You can also see how many minutes the app was on the screen and how long the app has been running in the background.

Depending on the apps that appear in this overview, you can, for example, disable the background activity of specific apps. You do this via the settings of the app. Just be careful not to turn off apps that require this background activity, such as messaging apps.

2. Use Energy Saver (but not always)

As the name suggests, this iPhone feature allows you to limit energy consumption. Your device switches functions off itself, sets the screen to black earlier and refreshes fewer functions in the background. Handy, although this has a noticeable effect on the performance of your device.

That is why we recommend that you only use this function if you know that you are short on battery life. In addition, your iPhone proposes itself at 20 percent battery to activate Energy Saving. When your iPhone is sufficiently charged afterwards, the device switches off the energy setting automatically.

3. Adjust the background activity of these functions

To get the most out of your iPhone battery, you can also turn off some functions that you are not using. These are also unused active in the background, and only stop when you turn them off manually. For example, you can turn off Bluetooth via the Control Center if you don’t want to pair devices with your iPhone and you can turn off Handoff, automatic downloads and automatic backups in the Settings app.

As mentioned, it differs from user to user which functions can or cannot be switched off. So check which functions you do or do not use and adjust your settings accordingly. For example, we like to use Handoff, but we always download updates to apps manually.

4. Set up your screen properly

Of course, the way you use an iPhone has a lot of influence on the battery life. But by adjusting the automatic lock, depth effect and brightness you can quickly add some time to this.

By shortening the automatic lock via ‘Settings> Display and Brightness> Automatic Lock’, the screen of your iPhone will go black earlier when you are not using it. By not automatically determining the brightness in the same menu, but lowering it yourself, you can maximize the battery life.

5. Turn off GPS (Location determination) for many apps

Some apps need to know your location information, but plenty of other apps don’t need this information. By revoking this access to apps, you not only save your battery, but you also protect your privacy. Follow the steps below and set the option to ‘never’ for all apps if your location is not required.

  1. Open the Settings app;
  2. Tap on ‘Privacy’;
  3. At Location Services, set all apps to ‘Never’ or ‘When using’.

6. Be choosy with notifications

Just like turning off GPS, turning off notifications for some apps can help make your iPhone last longer. After all, every notification lights up the screen, plays a sound and makes your phone vibrate. Moreover, notifications have only one purpose: to get your attention and make sure you get your iPhone again. So be selective in the apps that are allowed to send these messages. You switch off notifications as follows:

  1. Open the Settings app;
  2. Choose ‘Notifications’;
  3. Choose the apps that may or may not send you messages.

7. Do not close apps completely

Forcibly closing apps is not good for your iPhone, and it even slows down the device and drains the battery sooner. This is because your iPhone has to restart an app from scratch every time, instead of reactivating an app that is frozen in the background. Therefore, you only have to force close apps. We will tell you more about this in the tip below:

8. Turn off certain functions

If every percent matters, you can (temporarily) turn off some functions to save battery life. For example, turn off 4G and do not use a dynamic (moving) background on your home screen. You can also reduce the movement via the Accessibility settings. As a result, you get to see less flashy animations, which makes your iPhone less spectacular, but which saves your battery. You do this as follows:

  1. Open the Settings app;
  2. Tap on ‘General’;
  3. Choose ‘Accessibility’;
  4. Choose ‘Reduce Motion’.

9. Turn off Hey Siri

Hey Siri, turn yourself off! If you rarely or never use the voice assistant, it is better to turn it off. Of all iPhone battery tips, this is one that is only intended for people who don’t find Siri useful. Via ‘Settings> Siri’ you ensure that your iPhone no longer listens when someone says ‘Hey Siri’. Of course you save electricity with this.

10. Make smart use of ‘do not disturb’

If you don’t want to turn off notifications completely, do not disturb mode is the best alternative. This feature can block messages so that they don’t light up your iPhone screen. That’s why we recommend turning on the mode if you’re not using the phone anyway. For example, when you go to sleep, or your iPhone is in the locker at the gym.

Change battery

Are the tips not working? Then it might be wise to check the health of your battery, or have it replaced with a new one. We’ll tell you more about this in our iPhone battery repair guide.
