iPhone: Enable special one-handed keyboard

Since the iPhone 6, Apple’s smartphone has a larger screen that regularly becomes even larger. Many people still have difficulty operating the keyboard with one hand. That’s why you can activate a special keyboard for one-handed use.

Typing with one hand is very difficult and requires quite some effort, especially on the Max models. Fortunately, Apple has a solution for this and you can reduce the keyboard to the left or right of the screen. This allows you to use all letters and characters with just one hand.

You can activate the keyboard temporarily or permanently. We explain how to switch between the different keyboards.

  • Open an application with text input
  • Activate the keyboard
  • Place your finger on the globe or emoji sign
  • Wait a few moments

A pop-up menu will appear, tap the keyboard at the bottom with the arrow to the left or right. The keyboard will immediately shrink and move to the left or right of your screen. You can activate the normal keyboard again via the middle keyboard symbol.

Please note that this only works with the standard Apple keyboard, alternative keyboards do not yet have this option. Once you have made a choice, it will remain active until you manually change it again. If you find the above method difficult, you can also adjust this via Settings ▸ General ▸ Keyboards ▸ One-handed keyboard ▸ make a desired choice.

Please note, the one handed keyboard cannot be set up when display zoom is active. Go to Settings ▸ Display & Brightness ▸ Display ▸ choose ‘Standard’. When ‘Zoomed’ or ‘Larger text’ is chosen, the keyboard will not be able to be split.
