Switched from WhatsApp to Signal? Then there are functions that you can best disable. In these iPhone tips you can read how you do that!
iPhone tips: Signal functions that you have to switch off
Although Signal Functionally largely equal to WhatsApp, certain functions can be found in other places. In these iPhone tips we show where you will find functions that you can best disable!
1. Switch off visibility telephone number
In WhatsApp all contacts can see your telephone number, but in Signal that is not a requirement to chat with others. A good idea to eliminate the visibility of your telephone number, or at least to check whether it is switched off. You do this as follows:
- Open Signal and tap your profile photo at the top left;
- Tap ‘settings’ and then on ‘privacy’;
- Tap ‘telephone number’;
- Set the option ‘Who can see my number’ on ‘nobody’.
You can also set here whether people can find you on Signal if they have your number in their contacts.

2. Switch off reading confirmation
You can also disable reading confirmations, better known in WhatsApp as ‘blue check marks’, in Signal. Just like so -called ‘typing indicators’ (in WhatsApp the message ‘typing’). You do this in the following way:
- Open Signal and tap your profile photo at the top left;
- Tap ‘settings’ and then on ‘privacy’;
- Put the switch behind ‘reading confirmations’;
- Also turn off the switch behind ‘typing inducators’.
Now you know for sure that nobody can see if you have already read a message and not whether you are typing a message.

3. Switch off compression
If you send photos and videos to someone via Signal, the app automatically applies compression. The advantage of this is that you then send less data, but the disadvantage is that the recipient receives the photos and videos in a lower quality. You probably don’t want that, so that’s why it’s a good idea to eliminate this function. You do it like this:
- Open Signal and tap your profile photo at the top left;
- Tap ‘settings’ and then on ‘data use’;
- Tap ‘Media-Deputy Quality;
- Place a check mark behind ‘high’.
If you have to send many photos or videos via your mobile connection, you can (temporarily) switch on the compression in the same way.
