Is this a frog or a toad?

In the evening I often find this amphibian on a wall on my bushes. However, there are no ponds or streams nearby. However, it is not clear to me whether this is a frog or a toad. Based on the size I would suspect it is a toad. Unfortunately the photo is not very clear.

Answer

Dear Sander,

Based on your photo and your description, I suspect it is the common toad. This amphibian only needs surface water for reproduction and sometimes travels very long distances during the mating season. During most of the year you can find the animal in the most diverse habitats, including far from surface water.

Kind regards,

Tanja
