Is your battery status incorrect? This is how you calibrate the battery of an iPhone or iPad

Does your iPhone or iPad sometimes suddenly turn off while you still have power according to the battery icon? Then it is time to calibrate the battery. In this article we explain step by step how that works.

Calibrate battery for iPhone and iPad

If you have been using an iPhone or iPad for some time, you will recognize the following problem. Sometimes your battery gets stuck at 32 percent, or the device suddenly switches itself off while it indicates that you have 15 percent battery left. In these situations, the battery meter display is incorrect. You can solve this by calibrating the battery:

  1. Connect your iPhone or iPad to the wall socket, preferably using the original charger and cable;
  2. Now do a hard reset until the Apple logo reappears. From the iPhone 8 (Plus), you briefly press the volume up button, then quickly press the volume down button and then the button on the side;
  3. Leave your iPhone or iPad on the charger until the battery is 100 percent full;
  4. As soon as your Apple device is 100 percent full, leave it on the charger for another 60 to 90 minutes so that the iPhone or iPad can continue to charge.

Do you have an iPhone 7 or older model iPad and you can’t figure it out in step two? Then check out our article about resetting an iPhone. It explains in detail how you can give the device a hard reset per model.

During step three you will notice that the last percentages up to 100 percent are very slow. This has to do with the balancing process, in which the cells of the battery are discharged and charged until they have reached the correct final voltage. Calibrating an iPhone battery therefore does not provide a longer battery life, but a more realistic battery meter.
