Is your Spotify Connect not working anymore? It’s Apple’s fault (according to Spotify)

Are you having issues with Spotify Connect? You’re not alone, because according to Spotify, it’s Apple’s fault that Spotify Connect isn’t working. Here’s how it works.

Spotify Connect not working

Spotify and Apple have been at odds for a long time over various issues, including Apple’s policies in the App Store. Now there’s something else to add, because according to Spotify, it’s Apple’s fault that Spotify Connect no longer works properly. The feature makes it possible to listen to Spotify on another device, but to operate it with another device.

This way, you can play Spotify through a speaker while controlling the songs and volume via your iPhone. Spotify Connect is especially useful if you play songs via the HomePod, Apple TV or other external speakers. Do you use the function regularly? Then you have probably already noticed that an important function of Spotify Connect no longer works. You can no longer control the volume via the buttons on your iPhone.

Apple Disables Spotify Feature

Where you could previously adjust the volume of Spotify Connect via the buttons on your iPhone or iPad, this is no longer possible. To turn the volume up or down, you now have to open Spotify and go to the audio bar in the app. A cumbersome way, which Spotify reportedly did not choose itself. According to the music service, Apple has ensured that the function of Spotify Connect no longer works.

Spotify claims that Apple is once again abusing its dominant position. The music service has filed a request with Apple to re-enable the Spotify Connect function. Apple has stated in a response that only apps that work with the HomePod have support for controlling the volume via the buttons on the iPhone or iPad. This response is not very surprising, because Spotify still does not work directly with the HomePod.

No solution for Spotify Connect yet

To play Spotify through the HomePod, you’ll need to use AirPlay. There’s no other way to connect Spotify to Apple’s speaker. It’s unclear whether Spotify will change this to prevent Spotify Connect from malfunctioning for iPhone and iPad users. For now, it’s not possible to turn the volume up or down using the buttons on your Apple device when using Spotify Connect.

Spotify has now implemented a change in the app. If you are connected via Spotify Connect, you will receive a message as a user that the function is not working properly. You will receive this notification when you try to adjust the volume via the buttons on your device. The message will redirect you to the audio bar in the Spotify app. This will probably remain the case for the time being, because it does not seem that Apple will reactivate the function anytime soon.
