It is best to leave a condensing boiler on a low setting during the day when I’m gone, or should it be better set to 0?

I have a Bulex Themacondes boiler at home. It gave an error code F5. I had a technician come over and he repaired our boiler.

It now appears that the cause of the problem was the following: when I am out during the day, I turn off the heating in the house. At position 0 on the rotary knob. The technician told me this was the cause.

The condensing boiler constantly produces heat and this cannot be removed if the heating systems are set to 0. This is controlled by the thermostat in the living room. Apparently I should therefore set the temperature during the day from eg 8 am to 6 pm at 19 degrees and then from 6 pm to 11 pm at 22 degrees. As a result, the heaters must remain open at position 5 and therefore no more energy will be consumed than set on the thermostat.

My question: is this correct? Because at my mother’s house, she has a Viessmann boiler, the heating is often set to 0 when she is away from home. Or is this purely due to the fact that I own a condensing boiler and my mother doesn’t?

Answer

Hi Martin,

Looking at your boiler manual, F5 corresponds to combustion issues. The solutions they give about it have nothing to do with ‘heat surplus’ either. This boiler also does not have a pilot light. If no heat is required, the boiler will not produce any heat.

But if the room thermostat requests heat, the boiler will heat up to the required heating water temperature. If all heating taps are closed, the heat produced then cannot escape from the boiler and it enters protection.

Briefly; it has not so much to do with the type of boiler, but with the installation used. You have to make sure that at least one heater is left open if the room thermostat can kick in. It is therefore better to shut down the installation by setting the room thermostat to frost protection than by closing the heaters.

Kind regards,
Luc.
