JBL offers a lot. Many different types of wireless earphones for different target groups. This JBL Reflect Flow Pro is specifically made for a sporty target group that is not afraid to get their hands in the mud. At least, that’s what you can conclude from the images that JBL puts on its product page and product packaging. To make this target group warm to these earphones, JBL has ensured that they can withstand a considerable splash of water (IP68) and a beating. A long battery life should also appeal to the user and the earphones are equipped with wings, which they put firmly in the ear. This makes the in-ears less likely to fall out of your ear during activities. Finally, a string is attached to the charging box. Very sporty.

But there is also a lot to be said about the JBL Reflect Flow Pro outside of sports. For example, the earphones are equipped with noise reduction and a sound transmission mode, speech assistance and an extensive app that JBL likes to boast about.

JBL Reflect Flow Pro in the ear

So much for the properties that you could also make out from the specification list. You can expect a lot from earphones with a suggested retail price of about 175 euros, since good earphones with noise reduction are available in that price range. Think of the Enco X from Oppo, the Samsung Galaxy Buds2 or the Jabra Elite 85t. Although these are not specifically aimed at a sports audience, I prefer all three examples over the JBL earphones. This is primarily due to the fit and wearing comfort.

The round speaker of the JBL Reflect Flow Pro has a fairly wide diameter. Thanks to interchangeable tips, you can still adjust the size to your liking, but if the base is already too wide, even the smallest tips can become irritating over time. Thanks to the wings, the ears stay in your ear, because the wings clamp behind your ear. So you don’t have to worry about the earbuds falling out of your ears during exercise if they are too big. In addition to the tips, the wings are also interchangeable, so you can also adjust them to size.

The sound quality could be better, especially given its price range. The lows have been boosted quite a bit, drowning out the mids and highs. This makes all sound a bit muffled. From JBL’s perspective, I understand that they want to reach athletes with a full bass sound, so that uplifting music motivates you to perform better. But the adjustment is going through and the dull sound takes the stirring away for the most part.

The noise reduction is perfectly fine for its price range. When you turn this on you will experience a light pressure feeling on the ear. Despite this, a relatively large amount of ambient noise is neatly filtered out. The function that allows sound to pass through (useful for traffic, for example) is what JBL calls ‘Ambient Aware’. This function works fine. Almost all the ambient noise remains recognizable. However, the function causes a constant hiss that can be annoying with relaxing music or spoken audio such as podcasts.

The built-in microphones ensure the operation of the noise reduction and Ambient Aware, but can also be used for clearly intelligible conversations and, if desired, a speech assistant.

Battery life

The battery life of the JBL earphones is fine. So you can use them for a long time during a long (running) run or bike tour. The battery life is of course dependent on the playback mode. When you have noise suppression or sound transmission turned on, the earphones will last for six to seven hours. When you have these play modes off, you can get up to eight hours. That is an excellent battery life, as long as the earphones do not irritate of course.

You can charge the charging box via the USB-C port or wirelessly. This box has a capacity to charge the earphones three times.

JBL app

JBL also has a neat app for the Reflect Flow Pro. Please note that you pick the JBL Headphones app from the application store, as JBL offers many different apps. The app looks neat and offers an equalizer (unfortunately, you can’t really correct the dull bass sound) and options to adjust your ears as desired in terms of operation, voice assistance and playback modes. Unfortunately, I occasionally ran into bugs, for example that the possibilities are limited when multiple JBL headphones are paired. While I only had this Reflect Flow Pro connected and no other JBL devices in my bluetooth device history.

Conclusion: Want to buy JBL Reflect Flow Pro?

In the review I already mentioned three alternatives to the JBL Reflect Flow Pro, which are in the same price range and are better options. These JBL earphones are just a bit short in terms of wearing comfort and sound quality. The noise reduction, water resistance and battery life are pluses. It doesn’t make the JBL Reflect Flow Pro a bad product, but a bit too expensive. So interesting if you see them in a good offer.
