It is better to keep the battery of your ebike indoors when you are not using your bicycle and you cannot rely entirely on the normal mileage of your Tesla. In the winter, batteries struggle, and the owners of Google Nest Cam and Doorbell notice that too.
Nest Cam
The battery-operated Nest Cam and Nest Doorbell struggle with the cold when installed outdoors. The battery life quickly deteriorates due to low temperatures and Google seems to get a lot of complaints about that. As a result, Nest has a support message written to explain why.
In itself, both devices function fine as long as they are between -20 and +40 degrees Celsius, but as soon as it goes below 0 and therefore freezes, the battery has a harder time. Even if you keep charging them again and again, they will run out quickly due to low temperatures. This also works the other way around: in a hot summer, these smart home products charge twice as fast.
Solution for battery problem
There is a solution to the problem with the batteries in the Nest Cam: you can still make them work by supplying them with electricity directly. That only applies to the Cam, because the Doorbell really needs the battery to function. Is the battery not working properly and do you want to check that?
Then you can use the Google Home App to check how things are going. It will often indicate that the charging is paused or that it is charging slowly, along with a very long expected charging time. If that’s the case, your battery isn’t doing well and it’s probably suffering from the cold. The solution? Put your doorbell inside. But then of course you don’t have much to do with it. It is hoped that Google will think about better insulation in upcoming Nest products, for example, so that the cold will hopefully affect the battery a little less quickly.
Have you ever suffered from this and if so, what do you do to remedy this problem? Leave it in the comments.
