LastPass users were wrongly told they were hacked

LastPass has falsely reported to some of its users about others trying to log in from another country with their master password and email address. It appears in part to be an error that crept into their warning system.

Erroneous LastPass Messages

The easiest and safest way to keep your passwords safe is to put them under lock and key with a password manager. A well-known app like LastPass lets you create a master password that gives you access to your vault of passwords. Only on Tuesday, some LastPass users were informed by email that someone else was trying to log in from a foreign country using their master password.

On the Hacker Forum Reports kept piling up and this led to the question of whether or not there was a data breach at LastPass, but LogMeIn, the software company behind LastPass, quickly denied that. The Verge was first told that it was about login attempts, but not about situations where users’ master passwords were actually obsolete. Malicious persons allegedly made use of a database of leaked user passwords.

False Alerts

LogMeIn later revised that statement after more research into the issue was done. “We quickly investigated these activities and found no evidence of any login credentials being compromised by a third party, nor is there any indication that LastPass credentials were collected by malware, a malicious browser extension, or phishing scams. campaigns.”

LogMeIn clarifies that some of the notifications were sent as a result of an error with the Alerts system in LastPass. The error has now been resolved. The company also emphasizes that LastPass never stores user master passwords for security reasons. Your passwords are still safe with LastPass, but it is recommended that you still use the two-step verification with your account.
