Leak in Intel processors: is your Mac safe?

There is a flaw in Intel’s processors and some old Macs have this old chip. Are these Intel Macs still safe?

Leak in Intel processors: is your Mac safe?

Apple has been phasing out Macs with an Intel chip in recent years. Current Macs and MacBooks use Apple’s own chips. These include the M1 and M2 chip.

Perhaps it is a good thing that Apple is switching to its own chip, because a newly discovered leak in Intel’s processors can cause quite a lot of damage. The vulnerability allows users of one computer to steal the data of other users on the same computer. You should think of passwords, private data and banking matters.

The vulnerability was reported to Intel sometime in the summer last year. But was only made public to give Intel a chance to fix the problem. Intel has now released a fix for the processors through an update.

No fix yet for Intel-based Macs

But is a Mac with an Intel chip still safe? In any case, we can say with certainty that almost every Mac of the Skylake generation and newer with an Intel chip on the list of affected products stands. If you have a 2016 or newer Intel Mac (or 2015 iMac) then you can be pretty sure that the processor is affected by the leak.

At this time, to our knowledge, no fix for Intel-based Macs has been released by Apple. So at this point, unfortunately, there’s nothing you can do but wait for a possible update from Apple. Do you have a Mac with Apple Silicon, such as a MacBook Air with an M1 chip or a MacBook Pro 2022 with an M2 chip? Then you don’t have to worry and you are safe anyway.
