LG’s new 4k projector keeps curtains open

The South Korean manufacturer LG announces a new 4k projector, which offers up to 3,700 lumens. This puts the company ahead of the competition, but you also pay a lot for it. The euro price is not yet known, but the dollar price speaks volumes.

LG brought the demand for so-called ultra short throw (UST) projectors up and running with the original Cinebeam model. The newest member in this series can be called top-notch high-end. The term ‘short throw’ refers to the fact that you can place a projector relatively close to the wall, while projecting a large image. With ‘normal’ projectors and beamers, devices need more space to provide a wall or canvas with an image.

When we look at the new LG Cinebeam HU915QE, as its catchy name goes, we see that the device is capable of presenting a 120-inch image from a distance of about eighteen centimeters. In addition, the projector offers 3,700 ANSI lumens. That’s a decent amount of light, so you don’t have to close the curtains when using the projector. As a result, this LG may even replace your TV.

LG’s new 4k projector

In addition, the new 4k projector from LG must offer a contrast ratio of 2,000,000:1. That number does depend on a number of factors, such as how light the room is, for example. But this will be measured in an optimal situation. The 4K HDR video signal is delivered to the wall via a three-channel laser, which is supposed to counteract the rainbow effect (which you sometimes see when you move your eyes when looking at a projector image).

In the press release, LG does not mention aspects such as Dolby Vision (for the image) or Dolby Atmos (for the sound), so there is a good chance that the 4k projector supports the open standard HDR10. In addition, the device automatically adjusts its brightness to the ambient light and dynamic HDR tones are adjusted frame by frame. The adaptive contrast completes the offer, because the contrast is adjusted per scene.

Stream it

Finally, we find LG’s webOS on the projector. This is a smart operating system also found on the company’s televisions, which provides access to video streaming services such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+ and Apple TV+.

The projector should be available in the United States in a few weeks for a mighty price of $6,000. It is not yet known when this model will come to the Netherlands and for what price.
