Are you in possession of an iPad Air 2022, iPad Pro with M1 -chip or newer? Then since iPados 16.2 you can also use external displays, with a resolution up to 6K. This way you can work with multiple apps on your iPad and your external display. The external screen becomes a large iPad on which you can work, the resolution is automatically adjusted.
It has been possible for a while to use the USB-C port of the iPad to link an external screen. Even via the HDMI adapter for Lightning this is possible on older iPad models. Only then only shows the image of the iPad and can therefore not be used as an extra larger screen.
Pairing an external screen to your iPad
Are you in possession of an iPad with USB-C port? Then you can use a Thunderbolt USB-C cable and link it to the external screen with the same connection. Of course you can also use HDMI, but you do need an adapter, for example the Apple HDMI Adapter.

As soon as you connect the iPad to the screen you will see a message on the screen of your iPad that connection is made to the display. You can then engage internship manager if desired.
Manage external display
Once the screen is linked you can consult extra settings and possibly rank the screen.
- Open Settings on your iPad
- Navigate to ‘screen and brightness’
- Scroll down to ‘screens’

You can then consult the settings for the internal and external screen by tapping them in the list. For example, you can switch HDR on or off and in some cases you can adjust the display.
With the ‘Ranking’ option you can organize the screens. The situation is presented schematically and you can, for example, place the iPad display left or right of the external screen. This is especially useful if you want to drag a window or file from one screen to the other. Then it is handy that the ranking is good.
Webcam and outgoing sound
Since iPados 17 you can use the iPad even better as a ‘computer’. For example, you can also use the webcam of an external monitor via the external screens settings and you can adjust the settings for the outgoing sound.
In addition, you can adjust the size of the dock on the external screen, put the iPad in sleep mode (external display remains) and there is better support for multiple audio and video sources when Stage Manager is active.
Internship manager for iPad
With an iPad and an external screen you can create the ideal extensive workspace. Multitask with ease, move apps and adjust the size of windows on both screens, view several overlapping windows in one view and quickly switch between apps.

Are you in possession of an iPad Air 2022, iPad Pro with M1 -chip or newer? Then since iPados 16.2 you can use the external screen as an expansion of the iPad display. This way the dock is displayed on the external image so that you can quickly find your favorite and last used apps.
On the larger screen, Stage Manager will come into its own even better, because you then have more space and an extra screen. Moreover, you can drag files and windows from your iPad to your external display and vice versa.
Note: an external keyboard and a mouse are required to use your iPad with an extensive screen. Otherwise the screen can only be used as a ‘synchronous display’.
