It was already possible to lock applications with an access code. But that was quite cumbersome and not always reliable. Thanks to iOS 18 and iPadOS 18, you can easily lock apps with Face ID or Touch ID.
The feature has been added as standard to iOS and iPadOS and limits access to apps. This means that only you, or people who know your access code, have access to the applications. This ensures that not everyone can use the apps on your device.
Locked apps for iPhone and iPad
Have you installed applications on your iPhone or iPad that you would rather not be used by everyone who has your device in their hands? Then you can choose to lock them with Face ID or Touch ID. This means that only you, or people who know your access code, have access to the app.
Lock apps
- Place your finger on an app or widget
- Wait a few moments
- Choose ‘Requires Face ID / Touch ID’
- Confirm the adjustment

Use locked application
As soon as you want to use a locked application, your iPhone or iPad will ask for verification. For Face ID this will involve scanning your face and for Touch ID you will have to place your finger on the fingerprint scanner. If your face or fingerprint is not recognized, you can still enter the access code for your device. You will then have access to the app and can use it. You must always perform this verification before you can open and use the app.
Unprotect
Do you want to cancel the lock? Put your finger on an app you’ve locked. Wait a few moments and then choose ‘does not require Face ID / Touch ID’. You can then open the application again without an additional verification method.

Adjust lock or access code
Unfortunately, it is not possible to personalize the locking of apps. This means that the feature is always enabled and you always have to enter Face ID, Touch ID or a passcode to open the application.
You also cannot set a specific passcode for apps. The unlock code is therefore the same as that of your iPhone or iPad. Once someone knows the passcode of your device, they can also unlock the apps. This can be difficult if you want to protect certain apps on your iPad from your children.
