In addition to major innovations such as Dark Mode and the redesign of the Mac App Store, macOS Mojave also brings small (but important) improvements. One of these is that software updates are automatically downloaded and installed. In this tip, we’ll show you how it works.
macOS Mojave will automatically install updates
Apple releases a (minor) update for macOS several times a year, but not everyone installs it immediately. You may be continuously postponing the updates, or you may simply not know that a new version is waiting for you. With macOS Mojave, you don’t have to worry as much about updating as the operating system does it automatically for you. By default, system updates and new versions of apps from the Mac App Store are downloaded in the background.
If you want to ensure that updates are also installed immediately, you have to dive into the settings. Follow the steps below to set it up correctly.
- Open your Mac’s System Preferences (Book) via the app icon in your Dock, or the menu bar at the top left;
- Then choose ‘Software update’ in the screen that appears;
- Press ‘Advanced…’ and make sure the options ‘Install macOS updates’ and ‘Install program updates from the App Store’ are turned on.
And that was it! When an update is ready to install, you will automatically receive a notification. You will then need to confirm that your Mac reboots to install the version. You can always postpone this, for example, if it is not convenient.
iOS 12
Also in iOS 12, which is available for almost all recent iPhones and iPads, there is an option to install updates automatically. This will keep your iOS devices up to date. Check the tip below for this. When installing iOS updates, your iPhone or iPad must be connected to a Wi-Fi network and at least 50 percent full.
