MacOS 27 requires a Mac with Apple Silicon

During the State of the Union event platforms, Apple announced that Intel Macs next year no MacOS 27 will get. The software updates for these Macs will be limited from next year to security updates.

The support for Intel Macs is phased out because Apple wants to put all its focus and innovation on the Macs with Apple Silicon. In 2020, Apple started the transition to Apple Silicon with the launch of the M1 Mac machines. Two years ago the company completed the transition to Apple Silicon for all Macs and no new Intel Macs were made.

Limited MacOS 26 Tahoe Support for Intel Macs

Phasing out has already started with MacOS Tahoe, the macOS 26 update supports only five Mac computers that are equipped with an Intel processor. These are Macs released in 2019 or 2020. This is 13-inch MacBook Pro with 4 Thunderbolt 3 ports from 2020, the 16-inch MacBook Pro from 2019, Mac Mini early 2020, Mac Pro from 2019 and the iMac from the beginning of 2020.

In practice, this means that your macOS 26 not Can install on iMac Pro from 2017, Mac Mini from 2018, MacBook Air from 2020 (Intel), 15-inch MacBook Pro from 2018 and 2019, 13-inch MacBook Pro from 2018, 2019 and the MacBook Pro 13-inch (2 Thunderbolt 3 ports) from 2020.

End of macOS updates for Intel

Macs on macOS 15 sequoia that cannot update to macOS 26 Tahoe will receive two years of security updates. In addition, those Macs also receive new versions from the Safari. Apple did not announce when the support term will end. In all likelihood, these will stop in the autumn of 2027.

  2. Select the ‘About this Mac’ option in the menu.
  3. In the window that now appears, check the information that is displayed under the image of your Mac.

First you see the type of Mac you use, model and the model year. This includes ‘chip’ see type processor. If this is an M1 chip or newer, it is equipped with an Apple Silicon. If this is not a case then there is ‘Intel’, followed by the type of processor that is present in your Mac.
