The Magic Keyboard that Apple unveiled at the same time as the iPad Pro 2020 is perhaps an even more important announcement than the iPad itself. We have listed seven frequently asked questions and answers.
Apple Magic Keyboard FAQ
Apple is bringing the iPad closer to the Mac from iPadOS 13.4 and the Magic Keyboard. Apple tablets now support trackpads, which is a huge change. You need to know this about it.
1. Which iPads support the Magic Keyboard?
You attach the Magic Keyboard magnetically to the back of the iPad, so that it is connected to the Smart Connector. The iPad Pro 2020 and iPad Pro 2018 are the only two iPads that have this connection on the back, so the new Magic Keyboard is only suitable for these iPads.
The keyboard is available as an 11 and 12.9 inch version. So as long as you have an iPad Pro from 2018 or 2020, you are guaranteed to be able to use the Magic Keyboard with it.
2. What about older iPads?
Apple is adding support for trackpads and mice from iPadOS 13.4 and newer. This update is also supported by iPads other than the iPad Pro. Good news, because that means that all these tablets can handle a mouse or trackpad. In addition, Logitech has already announced an iPad case with a built-in keyboard and trackpad for the iPad Air 2019 and iPad 2019.
3. Does the trackpad work like a MacBook?
Yes and no. If you are familiar with a trackpad, you can immediately get started with the Magic Keyboard. Still, Apple has made some adjustments to make trackpads more compatible with the iPad. For example, you don’t have a traditional cursor in the shape of an arrow, but a circle that is the same size as the tip of your finger.
This circle automatically changes shape depending on what it moves over. If you swipe over a button, the circle becomes a square so that you can press the correct button more easily. The same goes for editing text: every time the cursor moves over text, it changes to a vertical bar, making it easy to put it in the right place.
4. Do I also have to touch the screen?
In principle not. Apple says that the trackpad replaces your finger and that you can operate the entire iPad with the trackpad.
Of course there will be times when it is more convenient to touch the screen, for example if you want to drag two apps next to each other, zoom in by pinching the screen with two fingers and other tasks. But these functions are also possible with the trackpad. It will therefore be a personal choice how often you will still use the touchscreen.
5. Will I soon be able to operate all my apps with the trackpad?
Along with the new keyboard, Apple has released a new developer software package. This allows them to build in support for trackpad and mouse functions. Although you will soon be able to operate the iPad and all your apps immediately with a cursor, most apps will initially behave the same as if you press the touchscreen with a finger.
Only when apps are updated can they support specific functions such as changing the cursor and selecting text in the best possible way. Apple’s iWork apps will be getting such an update soon, so let’s hope other apps won’t be long in coming.
6. What extras does the Magic Keyboard have compared to the Smart Keyboard?
In addition to the trackpad, the Magic Keyboard adds some changes that weren’t present on its predecessor – the Smart Keyboard. For example, the keys are illuminated, which makes it easier to type in the dark. An extra USB-C connection is also incorporated in the keyboard: you can use it to charge the iPad Pro.
Another improvement is the new way in which you can put the keyboard away. Apple has strongly reinforced the hinge, so that you can tilt the iPad at all angles. This makes it much easier to make a good viewing angle that is tailored to your posture. The iPad then ‘floats’ above the keyboard and is only connected to the Magic Keyboard at the back.
7. How much does the Magic Keyboard cost and when will it be available?
The Magic Keyboard costs 399 euros and must therefore be purchased separately from the iPad. The keyboard will be available in the Netherlands from May 2020. Do you want to know more about the iPad Pro 2020? Check out our extensive overview with everything you need to know.
