Make texts easier to read on iPhone or iPad

Are you having trouble reading texts on the iPad or iPhone? Increase the ease of reading with a number of simple settings.

iPad/iPhone users can adjust various settings so that the screen is easier to read for them. First increase the contrast as described in the tip ‘Adjust contrast for a more readable screen’. If this does not yield sufficient results, use the options below.

For example, make the letters on the iPad/iPhone bold.

  • Tap on Institutions.
  • Tap on Accessibility.
  • Tap on Display and text size.
  • Slide the slider behind ‘Bold text’ to the right.

The letters on the Home screen and the Unlock screen of the iPad/iPhone are white. A dark and solid background makes these screens easier to read. Set the background as follows:

  • Go to Institutions > Background.
  • Tap on Choose a new background.
  • In the different folders, find the photo you want to set as wallpaper.
  • Tap the photo you want to set. To get the greatest effect, it is best to choose a dark and solid photo or image.
  • Tap on Set up.
  • Tap on Access screen, Home screen or Both. Depending on the choice you make, the photo will appear as the wallpaper on the Lock screen (unlock screen), the Home screen (home screen), or on both screens.

To save power, the screen brightness of the iPad/iPhone is not set to the brightest by default. The brightness of the screen can be adjusted in two ways.

  • Go to Institutions.
  • From iOS 14/iPadOS 14, tap Screen and brightness. For iOS 13/iPadOS 13, tap Display and brightness.
  • Below ‘Brightness’ is a slider. Drag the dot on the slider to the right to make the screen brighter. Slide the dot to the left to darken the screen.

Tip: turn on the ‘True Tone’ option if it is available. The brightness of the device then adapts to the light of the environment. The darker the environment, the darker the screen. The brighter the environment, the brighter the screen.

Are you in an app and want to brighten the screen without leaving the app? You do this in the following way:

  • Swipe up from the bottom of the screen. On iPhone X, Xs, 11, and 12, swipe the screen down from the top right.
  • The Control Panel appears with an elongated bar with a sun on it. Swipe up on this to make the screen brighter.

Do you find the font too small on the iPad/iPhone? Make the font larger as follows:

  • Tap on Institutions.
  • Tap on Accessibility.
  • Tap on Display and text size.
  • Tap on Larger text.
  • Turn on ‘Larger text sizes’ by sliding the slider to the right.
  • The bar indicating the font size is given an extra size. Slide the bar to the size you want to set.

Note: Only apps that support dynamic text will adjust their font to the set format.
