You can link Matter accessories to the Apple home app and you can use them in your smart house. If you no longer want to use this device afterwards, you can completely remove the Matter accessory from the home app, but also iCloud key ring.
Are you not yet familiar with Matter? Then we would like to explain in short what this is. Matter is best seen as a communication protocol that is used in smart home devices to make interactions between different brands and products possible. It strives for a standardized approach to connect and operate various smart devices within a homely ecosystem.
Matter
There are already various accessories and devices on the market with Matter support. For example, we have already tested the smart Christmas lighting from Nanoleaf and Nuki Smart Lock 4.0 Pro. Both devices have support for Matter. This ensures that you can easily link the accessories to a Smart Home Hub from different brands.

The biggest advantage of Matter is that as soon as a device is suitable for this protocol you can use it in several smart houses. For example, not only Apple with HomeKit offers support for Matter, but also Google, Homey, Amazon and other SmartHome platforms. In addition, all these devices can also communicate with each other, even if they are linked to different hubs.
You have to configure a home hub to add Matter accessories to the home app. Matter accessories for which thread is needed require a home hub for which thread is called in, such as HomePod Mini, HomePod 2nd generation or Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) Wi-Fi + Ethernet, or a supported border-router from third parties.
Delete Matter accessories
In the home app you can easily remove an accessory via the steps below:
- Open the home app on your iPhone or iPad
- Navigate to the accessory
- Tap the tile
- Select the gear to open the settings
- Scroll down and choose ‘Remove Accessory’

Secured via iCloud key ring
Coupled Matter accessories are synchronized via iCloud key ring, regardless of which device or app you used to set them. Clutch keys that are stored in the iCloud key ring are end-to-end encrypted. No one else can see or read this data on the device itself or when they are sent.
If you remove an accessory in a home, it may be that they remain available in your list of Matter accessories and iCloud key ring for the time being. The reason for this is that you can easily re -link them afterwards. Do you want to definitively delete the device? Then you also have to get it from iCloud key ring.
- Open Settings on your iPhone or iPad
- Navigate to ‘General’
- Tap ‘Matter accessories’
- Select a part of the list
- Choose ‘Remove Accessory’

You can then remove the Matter accessory from iCloud key ring. If you have linked the device to multiple hubs from different manufacturers, you can also remove the accessory from separate features or all connected facilities.
On a Mac you can unfortunately unfortunately it is not yet possible to remove Matter accessories from iCloud key ring. An iPhone or iPad is required for this.
