Microsoft never calls!

There are constantly reports of scammers calling people and pretending to be Microsoft employees. Don’t fall for it and hang up. Microsoft never calls!

The stories have been the same for years: the phone rings and a Microsoft employee is on the phone. For example, according to the caller, the computer is infected with a virus or a hacker is trying to gain access. Whatever the reason, the so-called Microsoft employee wants to take over the PC to solve the problem. You may also be required to transfer various personal data. Never do that because the caller is always a scammer.

Usually you will be called by an English speaking person who warns that your computer is at risk. It is almost always a foreign telephone number. The caller says he works for, for example, the Windows Helpdesk or Microsoft Support. However, Microsoft will never approach you unsolicited by telephone. Not to help solve a computer problem and not to sell software or other services. So if someone from Microsoft calls you unsolicited, you know for sure it’s a scammer.

Blow your ears: Microsoft never calls! The people on the line are scammers. Under no circumstances give out passwords or other personal information. It is best to end the call immediately and hang up the phone. If they keep calling, contact the national Fraud Help Desk: 088-7867372 (local rate). They can advise you on how to deal with this.

Make a note of the caller’s phone number. Then pass this number on to the police. You can do this by telephone on 0900 8844 or via a report form. It helps the police in their fight against the scammers. If you have become a victim of these criminals, be sure to contact the police.

Sensitive information passed on over the phone? Then change the password of the PC, the password of your e-mail account and the login details of financial matters such as internet banking as soon as possible. If you have provided credit card information, block your credit card. If you have had to install software, uninstall it. Then let your antivirus program do a comprehensive scan of your system.
