Since iOS 17 and Watchos 10.1 it is possible to use Namedrop to easily share contact details with other iPhone and Apple Watch users.
With the help of AirDrop, users can exchange contact details thanks to Namedrop by simply keeping their iPhones together. Since iOS 17.1 and Watchos 10.1 you can also share this data between an iPhone and Apple Watch or two Apple Watch models.
Namedrop via AirDrop
With AirDrop you can easily share a file with a colleague or send photos. And in iOS 17 you have even more ways to share everything. For example, users with Namedrop can exchange contact details by simply keeping their iPhones together. In addition, it is also possible to share this data between an iPhone and an Apple Watch.
Namedrop is primarily intended for the business market so that you can quickly share your contact card with other Apple users. Of course this is also useful when you meet new people, for example on a group trip, study or festival visit with a new group of friends.
Supporting devices and software
Namedrop is available on all iPhone models with iOS 17 or newer. Do you want to share the contact details via an Apple Watch? Then you must be in possession of an Apple Watch Series 7 or newer, SE from 2022 or an Apple Watch Ultra or newer. At least Watchos 10.1 is also required. If you want to use the function, Bluetooth must also be active on both devices.
How does Namedrop work?
Namedrop works automatically by keeping two iPhones together. You can also keep an iPhone close to an Apple Watch or two Apple Watch models together that meet the above requirements.
You and the recipient can then select the following:
- Get only: You will receive the contact card on the other iPhone.
- Part: You will receive the contact card on the other iPhone and also share your own contact card.
- Contact details: Tap your telephone number or e-mail address under your name to change it
To cancel this process, get the two devices from each other before Namedrop is completed.
Are you unable to start a Namedrop between two Apple Watch models or an Apple Watch and iPhone? Then open the contacts app on your Apple Watch and tap your profile photo in the top right corner. Your contact card is opened and can now be shared by keeping both devices together.
Limits
Namedrop only works if no app is open on the iPhone and/or Apple Watch. So do this by keeping two devices together if the access screen or home screen is active.
In addition, it is good to know that Namedrop only works for sending new contact details, not for updating an existing contact person.
Turn off Namedrop
Do you not want to use Namedrop or share parts by keeping two devices together? Then you can disable this via Settings â–¸ General â–¸ AirDrop â–¸ Switch the ‘devices together’ option.
