New design for Gmail now available: 4 changes in a row

A major update to Gmail is now available, giving the popular mail app a makeover. In this article we list the biggest changes.

Gmail Material design update

Google is busy giving all its apps the same Material house style. This time it’s Gmail’s turn. The update is now available to all iPhone users. These are the most noticeable changes.

1. No more red bar

After you update the Gmail app, you’ll probably notice right away that the bar at the top is no longer red, but transparent. In addition, the search box has been moved to the center. From now on you can switch accounts by clicking on the photo on the right. Nothing has been changed in the menu structure.

2. Minimalist Design

Google’s Material design feels fresh and uncluttered. The latest update extends the distance between emails, senders and menus. In addition, more use is made of white space. Another big difference is that Gmail has looked closely at Inbox, Google’s mail app that will be discontinued at the end of next month. This ensures that certain e-mails are now grouped, such as advertisements and messages from social networks. This makes your inbox look tidier, without you having to do anything.

3. Personalize Gmail

Do you think Gmail feels a bit too ’empty’? Fortunately, Google has come up with something for this. You can personalize Gmail. You can choose from two display types in addition to the standard version: comfortable and compact. If you choose the first, the distance between emails will increase and you will get more white space. This makes the app feel even lighter.

If you choose the compact view, everything just ‘shrinks’, making the app a bit busier. You will get more overview for this, because you can see more emails on your screen. It will vary from person to person which view works best.

4. Work faster

Finally, you can now open attachments directly, without having to read the message first. This saves you time when, for example, you stand in line at the cinema and scan the QR code on your ticket. That makes Gmail just that little bit faster and easier to use.
