You may have noticed that Apple has given the Mail app a new design that works with Apple Intelligence. The biggest innovation is the division into categories such as Important, Transactions, Updates and Advertising, which automatically organize emails for a better overview.
However, not everyone wants to use this automatic sorting or the new priority view. In this article, we’ll show you how to use the new design or simply switch back to the classic email format.
New design for Mail
Together with Apple Intelligence, Apple is introducing a new design for Mail. The app will not be changed very drastically, but you will experience some changes. From now on you will find smart categories at the top, including Important, Transactions, Updates and Advertising. Mail will automatically sort your email messages into one of the categories or place the message in ‘All messages’.
Disable categories
Don’t want to use the categories? Then you can turn them off.
- Open the Mail app on your iPhone or iPad
- Navigate to an inbox, for example ‘Incoming’
- Tap the three dots at the top
- Choose ‘List view’

On a Mac you can also disable the smart categories. Click the three dots at the top of your inbox, then uncheck the ‘Show Mail Categories’ option.
Priority messages
From now on you will find an overview of Priority messages at the top of the inbox. These can be recognized by the Apple Intelligence logo with a colored background. This overview allows you to quickly view your most urgent emails, such as a boarding pass or an invitation to go out for dinner that same evening.
You can enable or disable priority messaging on an iPhone or iPad using the steps below.
- Open the Mail app
- Tap the three dots next to ‘Select’
- Choose ‘Show priority’

On a Mac you can activate this via the menu bar in the Mail app â–¸ View â–¸ Show Priority Messages.
