Apple recently announced the new MacBook Pro with a fresh design. According to the most recent rumors, the MacBook Air will also get a new design in 2022. For example, the laptop gets white screen edges and yes – a notch.
Screen notches are completely in again: MacBook Air also gets a notch
The new MacBook Air gets a notch. That’s what several well-known goodies say, including Jon Prosser by Front Page Tech and Dylandkt. Apple proved with the new MacBook Pro that a notch in 2021 is still fine. The MacBook Air will also follow in 2022. The big difference between the two laptops is that the MacBook Air has white screen edges – and therefore also a white notch. The MacBook Pro and iPhone have black screen edges.
Because of the black screen edges, the notch is not always visible. However, the notch of the MacBook Air with its white color is always in sight. The iPhone 13 has a smaller notch for the first time in iPhone history, and Android smartphones have switched to so-called “holepunch” designs for years. It seemed that Apple was slowly making the same switch. So nothing could be further from the truth – at least, for now.
In addition to the notch, we see a number of other major changes to the design of the new MacBook Air. This way, the laptop no longer tapers. This makes the Air look more like an iPad Pro than a laptop from the side. MagSafe is also making a return, as we saw earlier on the MacBook Pro. In addition, the new laptop will be available in all kinds of cheerful colors – including green, blue and red.
Why a notch, Apple?
The notch has a number of advantages. For example, the bezels are a lot thinner than before, so that the screen can grow without the laptop itself getting bigger. The infamous screen notch also ensures brand awareness. Everyone recognizes the iPhone by its notch and the triple camera design, but the MacBook design previously had little DNA of its own – except for the Apple logo, of course. That is about to change, thanks in part to the notch.
But, is the notch also a bit nice? That is of course subjective. Many people find the screen notch ugly. The notch provides a good dose of asymmetry, which we are not used to from Apple. If you don’t like the new design, you’ll have to do with your ‘old’ MacBook for a few more years. Knowing Apple, the notch isn’t going anywhere in the coming years.
