‘New Motorola gets wrap-around display and stylus’

A phone with a screen that covers the entire surface. A phone with a wrap-around display, or an enveloping screen. These are all descriptions of a smartphone that Motorola would be working on.

Motorola with wraparound screen

Motorola is working on a special phone. This is evident from a recently applied for patent, which LetsGoDigital discovered. The patent describes a screen technology that completely encases a phone. That is, the screen is wrapped all the way around the housing, so that all four sides of the device consist of screen surface.

We have seen this concept before, in 2019, when Xiaomi announced its Mi Mix Alpha. This futuristic phone consisted of a lot of technically advanced gadgets, including the status icons and touch buttons on the sides of the curved screen. Accidental touches were also taken into account on the phone via artificial intelligence. In addition to these manufacturers, Samsung, Huawei, Honor and Oppo also work such a wrap-around screen.

Screen everywhere

Motorola filed a patent with the USPTO (United States Patent and Trademark Office) in 2020. This patent was approved at the end of last year and the manufacturing process can be read in detail in the documentation. There is talk of “a smartphone in which the housing is completely wrapped with a flexible screen.” This documentation has also been submitted in Germany to ensure worldwide protection of the patented technology.

The Motorola phone consists, as it were, of one large flexible screen, because the sides are also covered by it. This means that physical buttons have to be replaced by touch buttons, and the USB-C input, the microphone and the SIM tray are placed at the top and bottom. It is not yet known where the camera system on this concept will be located. The Xiaomi Mi Mix received a small strip on the back for this.

A large screen surface is very suitable for operation with a stylus and the patent documentation speaks of that too. Motorola already has experience with this, as witnessed by the Moto G Pro.

A wraparound screen on a phone looks very nice, but it is also very susceptible to damage. In addition, it concerns new technology in which sensors and buttons work in a different way. How does that work in practice? How does the battery hold up to such a large screen? What about accidental touches? These are all questions that we will hopefully get answers to in the near future.

What do you think of this Motorola phone with wrap-around display? Is a screen on the front and back the ideal alternative to a regular smartphone? Let us know in the comments at the bottom of this article.
