Nice for the autumn holidays: do experiments with Google Science Journal

Google Science Journal is now also available for iOS. This means an autumn holiday full of fun experiments via the sensors of your iPhone.

Google Science Journal now for iOS

Google has published its Science Journal in the App Store. This cool app was already released for Android last year and gives children the opportunity to perform countless experiments via the sensors of an iPhone or iPad. The findings are immediately recorded in the app.

Children learn best by doing and that’s where the idea for this app comes from. With Science Journal it is very easy to record situations via the sensors of the iPhone. Example by measuring light or sound in different places, or by keeping track of the speed of the movement of the device. Air pressure and other measurements can also be taken with the app.

You keep track of the findings in projects, where all recorded data is clearly arranged in graphs. A disadvantage is that the app on iOS does not (yet) support Dutch. It is therefore necessary to be able to speak at least a little English. Hopefully Google will roll out more language options soon as it would make the app a lot more accessible. The Android version does support Dutch.

When starting the app you have to give different permissions. For example, a permission to use the microphone is required to measure sound in your environment. Access to your camera is needed to measure light in your environment and to add photos to your notes. The app also wants access to your photo library, for example to add existing photos to your experiments.
