Nokia has admitted in an interview that the Android 11 update campaign has been slow. The smartphone brand of the Finnish company HMD Global does indicate that it has learned lessons from that experience.
Nokia updates
As a smartphone brand, Nokia is strongly committed to reliability and a strong update policy. The ‘3-3-3 promise’ is what the brand calls its approach. Smartphones receive version and security updates for three years, along with a three-year warranty. With this, the brand does better than most of its competitors, you can read that in our overview of the update policy of manufacturers.
So Nokia is doing better, at least if we don’t talk about the speed with which new Android versions are rolled out. Last year there was a significant delay with the Android 11 updates and in an interview with Android Authority the brand now recognizes the problems.
“We didn’t have much success rolling out Android 11, and I think we learned from that,” said HMD Global CEO Stephan Taylor. He also states that the brand ran into problems because the company did not participate in the Android 11 beta program. That all changed last year with the Android 12 beta for the Nokia X20. Taylor also points to the fast Android 12 update for the X20 as proof of the new approach at the company.

Paid updates?
Last week, information leaked about a plan from HMD Global that allows customers to extend the support of their phone for a fee. The Nokia X20, for example, gets three years of updates, but that could be extended to four years at an additional cost.
It is not yet known whether such a formula will actually come into existence, but it is certain that our own Dimitry Vleugel is enthusiastic about the idea of paid updates. He does not find long update support so self-evident at all.
What do you think, would you be willing to pay for longer support with your smartphone? Are you happy that Nokia may be back on track with its Android 12 updates? Let us know in the comments at the bottom of this article.
