Google has released the October security update for its Pixel smartphones. This update fixes some hardware issues and fixes some vulnerabilities. It is also the last guaranteed security update for the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL.
October security update
The October security update will be rolled out in phases over the next week. Google reports in the Pixel community that all supported Pixel devices running Android 13 can expect this update starting today, depending on carrier and device. However, you will receive a notification once the update is available for your Pixel phone. You can also manually check whether you have already received the update. You do this in this way: go to settings -> Software update -> Download and install.
Google has provided the update with fixes for the following audio, VPN connection, Wi-Fi connection and user interface issues. The details find you here.
Latest for the Pixel 4 and 4 XL
For the 2019 Google Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL, this is the last official security update. Unfortunately, these devices don’t enjoy the five-year security updates that newer Pixels (Pixel 6 and above) do get, so that’s the end of the month for the Pixel 4 series. The Pixel 3a, 3a XL, 4, 4 XL, 4a, 4a (5G), 5 and 5a (5G) also get three years of guaranteed security updates instead of five years.
Pixel 4 fans, don’t worry. Google always provides these devices with a very last patch before they have to do without. For example, the Pixel 3a received its last update in September, a little later than Google initially planned. In December or January, the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL will probably get an update for the last time.
