During Unpacked, Samsung not only announced its new Galaxy S22 series and Galaxy Tab S8 series, but also an extension for the current update policy. These Galaxy devices can count on an additional year of updates.

Samsung expands update policy

In early 2021, Samsung announced that several Galaxy phones will receive security updates for at least four years after the original launch. A year earlier, Samsung reported that a number of Galaxy phones could count on three new Android versions. Then, in mid-2021, Samsung came with the good news that its Enterprise Edition devices would receive security updates for no less than 5 years.

Now the South Korean tech giant is taking it one step further by providing a whole series of phones and tablets with a year of extra updates:

  • Three new Android updates Four new Android versions
  • At least four years of security updates At least five years of security updates

The security updates are rolled out on a monthly and quarterly basis. The Android versions are updated once a year. The following Galaxy devices are eligible for the new update policy.

And what about other Samsung phones?

Regarding other Galaxy devices, Samsung says: “Samsung is committed to providing Galaxy users with the latest mobile experience. The Galaxy devices that do not have the correct hardware specifications to qualify for four generations of One UI upgrades, still have support for up to three generations of One UI upgrades.”

  • Overview: How long does each brand update its Android phones?

Many competitors only give their phones version updates for two years and some manufacturers even come up with one Android version for high-end smartphones. Google, the inventor of Android, has also been lagging behind Samsung for a while. The search giant gives its Pixel 6 series three new Android versions and five years of security updates. Older Pixel phones will receive three years of new Android versions and a minimum of three years of security updates from when the device was first available on the Google Store in the United States.
