Operating Apple Vision Pro – you need to know these gestures

The Vision Pro will appear in stores next week and the headset has a completely new way of controlling it. This is how you will operate the Apple Vision Pro!

Vision Pro will be released soon

We finally know when the release date of the Vision Pro is, because Apple will release the headset in American stores on Friday, February 2. This is Apple’s first new device since the introduction of the Apple Watch, which was released in 2015. The Vision Pro works without controllers, so it is operated entirely via hand and eye gestures. We have never seen that way of controlling at Apple before.

To control Apple’s first spatial computer, you don’t need a mouse or controller, you just have to look at the button you want to press. You then perform certain hand gestures to operate the Vision Pro. Are you curious how that works? Then read on, because Apple has previously provided more clarity during an explanation to developers.

This is how you should operate the Vision Pro

Developers have already had time to develop software and applications for visionOS, the new operating system of the Vision Pro. To create those apps, Apple previously explained how users should operate the Vision Pro. The company has unveiled six hand gestures that control visionOS. These are the following:

  • Squeeze: you can press a button by pinching your thumb and index finger together;
  • Squeeze twice: by bringing your thumb and index finger together twice you can select and open a file;
  • Squeeze and hold: holding your thumb and index finger together gives you access to additional functions, such as selecting text;
  • Pinch and drag: by holding your thumb and index finger together and swiping in the right direction, you can scroll on (web) pages or swipe between photos;
  • Zoom: With the Vision Pro, you can zoom in by moving your hands towards each other, to zoom out you do the opposite;
  • Turn: by squeezing both your hands and making a rotating movement, you can tilt photos or rotate (digital) objects.

To perform these gestures, first look at the button, object, or menu you want to use. Only then can you make the movement with your hands. This way, operating the Vision Pro is a lot more precise. In the beginning it will take some getting used to. In any case, the first user reviews are very positive about the new control method of the spatial computer.
